Thibodo Family Papers
Scope and Contents
The Thibodo Family Collection, which dates from 1854 to 1983, consists of family photographs, two editions of the Book of Common Prayer (1853 and 1866), and medical notes. There is also a diary of Dr. A.J. Thibodo regarding the Northwest Exploring Expedition of 1859, which was edited for publication by Whitman College Professor Dr. Howard S. Brode. Correspondence between Dr. Brode and Dr. A.J. Thibodo's son, Dr. Frances Thibodo, and granddaughter, Marie Thibaudeau is included, as are letters regarding the Masonic affiliation of Dr. A.J. Thibodo.

Biographical Note
Dr. Augustus James (A.J.) Thibodo was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada on October 29, 1832. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1851 and his master’s degree in 1854 from Queen’s College in Kingston. Dr. Thibodo received his M.D. from Trinity College in 1874. Following a trip to California and Europe, he returned to Kingston in 1858 and joined an exploring expedition to the northwestern United States in 1859. The expedition left St. Paul, Minnesota in June of 1859 and arrived in Walla Walla, Washington in December of the same year. Once in Walla Walla, Dr. Thibodo practiced medicine, was involved in mining, and was active in civic matters, including the Library Association. He was the County Coroner, and got married in 1864. Dr. Thibodo died in 1910.

Portions of this collection was donated to the Whitman College and Northwest Archives by Marie Thibaudeau in July 1977. The accession number associated with this donation is retro-0128. There is no documentation regarding the provenance for additional materials in the collection.
