Henri M. Chase Papers
Scope and Contents
The Henri M. Chase Papers consists of correspondence, a newspaper account of his life, and a roster of the members of Company M. These papers, which date from 1857 to 1947, also contain commission papers, "Incidents of a Voyage From Boston to California, In the Year 1849, in the Brig 'Forest'," city clerk receipts, and certification of service in the Indian War of 1856. There are also mortgage loan papers and a series of letters between Whitman College president Winslow S. Anderson and the nephew of Captain Chase.

Biographical Note
Henri M. Chase traveled from Boston to San Francisco, around Cape Horn, in 1849. From there he journeyed north to the Oregon Territory and then on to Washington Territory. There he organized Company M of the Second Regiment of the Washington Territory Volunteers and served as its captain, was elected to the Washington Territorial Assembly, became Walla Walla city treasurer, and was one of the founders of the Walla Walla and Columbia River Railroad.
