Scope and Contents

The Whitman College collection of maps, prints, and paintings dates from 1799 to 2017 and contains materials relevant to researchers of the history of the Pacific Northwest, as well as Whitman College. Formats include survey and expedition maps, military maps, regional plat or property maps, Walla Walla and Walla Walla County maps, illustrated maps, portrait and landscape paintings, posters, art prints, and oversized photographic prints, such as panoramas. The collection may be of interest to researchers of local history, including early American exploration of the western United States, shifting land use patterns, depictions of historic figures, professional and fraternal organizations, and early relations between Indigenous Peoples and settlers in the region.

The Whitman College maps, prints, and paintings collection was created in 2024 in order to represent the large amount of oversized materials which were previously undescribed. The collection is comprised of materials originating from a combination of donations by individuals, transfers from campus offices, and government documents.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: I. Maps, II. Paintings, and III. Posters, prints, and illustrations. The "Maps" series is further arranged into four sub-series: I. Military maps II. Regional maps, III. Survey and expedition maps, and IV. Walla Walla: City, County, Valley maps. The "Posters, prints, and illustrations" series is further arranged into four sub-series: I. Illustrations, II. Newspapers, III. Photographs, and IV. Posters.

The collection is arranged alphabetically.
