James Stevens Manuscript
Scope and Contents
The James Stevens Manuscript contains the manuscript “Washington: The Enterprise State” by James Stevens which was published in 1953. There are two copies of the manuscript with comments from Dr. Robert Whitner, a former Whitman history professor, and a letter from Stevens addressed to Chester Maxey. The book is about regional history in the Pacific Northwest.

Biographical Note
James Stevens was an American writer and poet. He was born in 1892 in Iowa. He worked at logging camps as a teenager and later fought in World War One. He is widely known for his own interpretations of the legend of Paul Bunyan, and he had his poetry and stories published in the magazine the American Mercury. Later on in life, he worked in public relations for the West Coast Lumberman's Association. Stevens died in 1971.
