Susannah G. Applegate Manuscript
Scope and Contents
The Susannah G. Applegate Manuscript, which dates circa 1980, contains unpublished manuscript chronicles Jesse Applegate’s life and pioneer journey. The manuscript is titled “Jesse Applegate: Oregon’s Prince of Pioneers.” It spans nearly 2,600 pages, and represents Susannah Applegate’s lifelong research on her relative. Jesse Applegate was an early Oregon pioneer who helped develop a second trail to the Willamette Valley. The manuscript also includes several photographs and portraits of Applegate family members.

Biographical Note
Susannah Applegate was the grand-niece of Jesse Applegate, an early Oregon pioneer. Jesse Applegate led an expedition to create a southern route to the Willamette Valley, providing an easier and safer journey. The new trail was known as the Southern Immigrant Route, the Scott-Applegate Trail, and the Applegate Trail. It became an alternative to the Oregon Trail.
