This collection contains materials related to the proposed Dayton Dam and the Touchet Division, Walla Walla Project from Whitman College geology professor, Robert Carson. These papers, which date from 1976 through 1977, also include correspondence and reports from the United States Department of the Interior and the Washington State Department of Ecology, newspaper clippings and letters to the editor, and photographs and materials relating to Whitman College's Roo Rat Society.

Biographical Note

Robert J. Carson is a professor emeritus at Whitman College. He taught geology at Whitman College, as well as at North Carolina State University and the University of Oregon before coming to Walla Walla, Washington in 1975. Carson has worked to advocate for alternative energy like solar power, and has spoken out against the Snake River Dams and Mill Creek Levees. He has also advocated for dismantling other dams in Eastern Washington. Carson’s specialty is quaternary geology in Washington, northeastern Oregon, northwestern Wyoming, and Mongolia.

Donated to the Whitman College and Northwest Archives by Robert J. Carson in September 2017. The accession number is 2017-060. A second portion was donated by Carson in 2020 and its accession number is 2020-015.
