The John Prentice Allen Papers includes correspondence between John and his parents and friends, and material describing travel and entertainment experiences. This collection, which dates from 1930 through 1979, also holds records of his career in library administration, genealogical materials relating to his family, and Japanese language materials relating to his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Some material included in this series is foreign language material relating to Allen's work in the military translating Japanese.

The majority of this series is correspondence between Allen and his parents, Rudolph and Anna.
