Scope and Contents

Frankie Ladley Wakefield’s scrapbook contains photographs of trips and outings with family and friends, travel brochures and mementos, programs, postcards, menus, dance cards, and other ephemera, many of which were created in conjunction with Whitman College social events as well as Simmons College social events. Gerald DeRoss Ladley’s photograph album includes photos of Whitman College memories as well as trips and outings with family and friends.

Biographical Note

Frankie Ladley Wakefield attended Whitman College from 1923 to 1927, graduating in 1927 with a B. S. in Economics. While at Whitman, her family resided in Seattle. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Society and served on Whitman’s Women’s Self Governing Board, the Pioneer staff, and the Waiilatpu staff. After graduating from Whitman, Wakefield earned a degree in retailing from Simmons College and studied at Columbia University. Among her professional positions were Personnel Director for Best’s Apparel (Seattle, Washington) and Vice President of the Metropolitan Business College. She also worked in family assistance planning for the state of Washington. She died on November 22, 2004 in Bellevue, Washington.

Gerald DeRoss Ladley graduated from Whitman in 1927 with a degree in Economics. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He later served as principal of Columbia High School at Attalia, Washington before serving in the United States Navy between 1942-1946. During World War II, he was a Lt. Commander and an instructor in gunnery at Pensacola, Florida. He died on September 29, 1977 in Arroyo Grande, California.

Abstract

This collection contains a scrapbook and photograph album created by Frankie Ladley Wakefield and Gerald DeRoss Ladley, siblings, who both attended Whitman College.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated to the Whitman College and Northwest Archives by Herbert V. Ladley in February 2005 and September 2008. The accession numbers are 2005-003 and 2008-016.

Processing Information

The scrapbook was unbound and divided into two sections to better preserve it and its contents. Researchers should note that items appear to have been cut out of the scrapbook in several places and that the scrapbook is in extremely fragile condition.
