Scope and Contents

The William H. Taubeneck Papers houses personal papers of William H. Taubeneck. This collection, which dates from 1897 to 2007, consists of field maps, petrographic thin sections, geochemistry analysis, field notebooks, photographs, slides, and rolled maps. It also includes a set of photocopied field notebooks from 1897, 1899, and 1900.

Biographical Note

William Harris Taubeneck was born on August 27, 1923 in Marshall, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and then attended Oregon State University (OSU), receiving a B.S. and M.S. in geology. From 1951 to 1955, Taubeneck taught at OSU while completing his PhD at Columbia University. He was a professor at OSU until his retirement in 1983. His research focused on tectonic history of the Pacific Northwest and the origin of granitic rocks in the Wallowa Mountains. Taubeneck did extensive geological mapping in the Wallowa Mountains and northeastern Oregon. He received the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1963 and the Loyd F. Carter Award for Outstanding and Inspirational Teaching in Science in 1983. Taubeneck died on May 24, 2016.
