Historical Note
The Archaeological Institute of America (A.I.A.) was established in 1879 “for the purpose of promoting and directing archaeological investigation and research” through various scholarly and educational activities. Through its local societies, the A.I.A. sponsors lectures and other events related to archaeology.
The Walla Walla Society of the A.I.A., the twenty-second local society formed under the auspices of the institute, was organized in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1906. Charter members of the society included the Walla Walla Art Club, the Whitman College Library, Whitman College Professor Louis F. Anderson and Mabel Baker Anderson, and Whitman College President Stephen B. L. Penrose and Mary Shipman Penrose.
