Scope and Contents

The Ginera Whitman Lutz Collection on Marcus and Narcissa Whitman consists of letters, a journal and trail notes of Narcissa Whitman, typescripts of letters, correspondence regarding the issuance of a commemorative postage stamp, photographs, newspaper clippings, and the research and notes for a book about the Whitmans, "Time and Distance."

Biographical Note

Sarah Ginera Whitman Lutz was born in June, 1897 in Traverse City, Michigan to David and Anna Lutz. She was the great-grandniece of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. She married Roy E. Lutz, with whom she had a daughter, Marleen Lutz. She died in February, 1981, and was buried in Bellingham, Washington. Before her death she began work on a manuscript about the Whitmans, “Time and Distance.”
