Scope and Contents

The Ralph W. Stevens Papers houses the personal and business records of Ralph W. Stevens. This collection, which dates from 1937 to 1987, consists of correspondence, medical practice day books, scrapbooks highlighting Stevens’ work with the Chamber of Commerce, and awards and commendations received for civic activities. It also contains a case study of the controversial decisions involving the building of a new high school facility in Walla Walla.

Biographical Note

Ralph W. Stevens was born on July 20, 1909 in Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin and joined their medical residency program. In 1937, Stevens moved to Walla Walla and opened an eye, ear, nose, and throat practice in the Baker Boyer building. Shortly after opening the practice, Stevens joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and his business partner, Clifford D. Hogenson, ran the clinic while he was away. Stevens was active in the Walla Walla community and was involved in the School Board, Walla Walla Symphony Society, the Walla Walla Community Concert Board, Rotary, and the First Congregational Church. In 1964, he received the Chamber of Commerce’s “Citizen of the Year” Award of Merit. In 1969, he received the Washington State Medical Association’s Robins’ Award for community service. He was married to Bernice Stevens who died in 1989. Stevens died on May 27, 2004 in Walla Walla.
