C. Eugene Woodruff Scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The C. Eugene Woodruff Scrapbook is a memory book that contains photographs of Woodruff’s time at Whitman. This scrapbook, which dates from 1918 through 1921, consists of photographs of Whitman’s campus, Woodruff’s friends, clippings, programs, and other college ephemera. This collection gives an insight into activities that were notable for a college man in this time period.

Biographical Note
Dr. C. Eugene Woodruff was born in Gibbon, Nebraska, on January 13, 1899. He graduated from Whitman College in 1921, and received his medical degree at Yale Medical School. Dr. Woodruff and his wife, the former Alice Miles, married in 1927. While working on a research team at Vanderbilt University in 1931, the Woodruff's isolated a "pure" virus in what was hailed as a major medical breakthrough. Their research resulted in an inexpensive way of raising vaccine. The Woodruffs resided in Northville, Michigan for most of their lives. Dr. Woodruff died there on April 9, 1980.
