Scope and Contents
The Charles W. Phillips Collection houses the personal papers of Charles W. Phillips. This collection, which dates from 1872 to 1913, contains copies of photographs, newspaper clippings from Charles Phillips’ scrapbook, genealogical records, illustrations and maps concerning Dreamland Park, biographical information on Phillips, advertisements for businesses operated by Phillips, and correspondence.

Biographical Note
Charles W. Phillips was born on May 27, 1855 in Salem, Oregon. He and his family moved to Walla Walla in 1860. In 1877, Phillips was a scout for General Howard in the Nez Perce Indian Wars. On November 3, 1881, he married Nellie Siskyou Rockerfellow and the pair moved to La Grande, Oregon to start a family. There, they owned a hardware store. After three years, the Phillips moved back to Walla Walla. Phillips created and built a park called Dreamland which opened in 1903. The park contained a zoo, garden, aviary, athletic field swimming pool, and outdoor lake. Phillips died in June, 1922.
