Scope and Contents

The Robert C. and Iris L. Little Myers Papers consist of scrapbooks and photographs from their time at Whitman College in the 1920s, Iris’s landscape plans for various businesses, and material on the railroad industry. This collection, which dates from 1924 through 2000, also contains biographical information, correspondence, photographs, publications, and personal memorabilia from travel and community activities.

Historical Note

Robert C. Myers, Whitman College class of 1929, was born in Columbia City, Indiana, in 1903. He spent his childhood in Redlands, California, and later moved to Portland, Oregon. Robert first came to Walla Walla in 1924 to enter Whitman College. He married Iris L. Little in Walla Walla on July 11, 1937. He worked as a landscape designer and nurseryman for 43 years. He was a lifelong railroad buff, a hobby that took him thousands of miles on trips in this country and many others around the world. Robert died in 1973.

Iris Laurel Little Myers was born April 27, 1907, in Arlington, Oregon. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1924 and was a cum laude graduate from Whitman College in 1928, and was the schools first woman newspaper editor since World War I. Upon graduation she worked briefly for the Hermiston, Oregon Herald before joining the Walla Walla Bulletin in 1929 as society editor. She continued as women's editor until retirement in 1968. She became the first editor of Fifty-Year-Plus News, a publication for the older segment of the Whitman Alumni Association. She received the 1984 Alumna of Merit Award and was on the Whitman College Alumni Association Board of Directors. During her tenure at the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, she found time to teach English at Walla Walla High School in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She died in 2000.
