Scope and Contents

The Clyde McFadden Collection consists of articles, certificates, issues of Vashon College's "The College Exponents," and two catalogues for Vashon College. This collection, which dates from 1879 and 1969, contains obituaries, copies of speeches from Congress, a copy of a sermon, booklets and pamphlets on farming and farm equipment, land deeds, personal correspondence and professional forms. It also includes business and finance forms for Duane McFaden, booklets, a booklet on Washington resources, yearbooks poster, a stencil, a painting of Naval officers, a diary, and a sketch of pioneers.

Biographical Note

Clyde McFaden was born December 19, 1890 to Duane and Mary McFaden in Walla Walla, Washington. He attended Sharpstein grade school and continued on to Walla Walla High School, but did not graduate. He began to work at McFaden Farm and Machinery and Hardware Corporation, a business his father started. Afterwards, he was a cartoon student at Ace School of Drawing in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated and began to draw cartoons for high school yearbooks. Around the same time, he began to pursue a career in photography. He met his wife Clara Secrest in Portland, Oregon and adopted her two daughters, Mamie and Margeret. They returned to Walla Walla, Washington. Clyde worked for Whitehouse-Crawford as a tailor and retired in 1958. Clyde was an avid fan of fishing and photography. Clyde died on September 1, 1947.
