Scope and Contents

The Harry Gustav Johnson Papers consists of an editorial titled "Books" (date unknown), miscellaneous school papers, miscellaneous writings and an editorial titled "Heads" (1923). This collection, which dates from 1920 through 1927, also has a letter to National Geographic (1927), theatre materials and letters (1926-1927), a Players' Club Program (1926), an index on counties in Oregon, a list of names (date unknown), a Dramatic Club Program (1927), a Ye Pioneer article (date unknown). It also contains an Orpheum CircuitProgram (1925), two dance programs (1925), history notes about the Vigilantes of the Tum-A-Lum residence, programs for an international debate (1927), correspondence (1924-1927), Reed College class notes (1924), and short stories entitled "Pinnacle Pike" (1923), "The Cave of Wauka" (1923), "Blackie Dunham Begins" (1923), "Wife or Mother?” and "In Reverse" (1923), "Wauka's Cave of the Jinestone" (1923), two untitled stories, one from 1920, "Into the City of Rocks,” and "The Land that Time Forgot.” This collection gives an insight into the life and works of Harry Gustav Johnson.

Biographical Note

Harry Gustav Johnson was born on April 30, 1904 in Walla Walla, Washington to June and Gustav Johnson. He graduated from Whitman College in 1927. He went on to teach and lecture throughout the United States on meteorology and astronomy. He was the founder and director of the Brown Foundation and held many offices in the Astronomy Society. He died on June 8, 1994.
