Scope and Contents

The Frank S. Bown Papers houses the personal papers related to Frank S. Bown. This collection, which dates from 1876 to 1957, consists of photographs of Walla Walla, a photocopy of a map of Walla Walla from 1876, photographs of Whitman College Glee Club, military documents, two scrapbooks, and music from "Choral Finale from 'The Chief Joseph Legend'" by John Verrall. It also contains pamphlets and educational materials, including "The Story of the Declaration of Independence,” "Oregon: A Program,” “The American Missionary,” “The Whitman Alumnus: Convocation News,” “A Brief History of The Washington Territorial Militia 1855-1889 and The National Guard of the State of Washington 1889-1957,” and "The Ten Greatest Mathematicians.”

Biographical Note

Frank S. Bown was born in Washington on December 17, 1910. He attended at Whitman College and graduated in 1934 with a degree in Mathematics. At Whitman, he held several positions including President and Vice President with the Independent Men, was a part of the track team, and was a member of the Ankeny Field Committee. Bown also participated in theater productions, the Glee Club, and sang opera. After Whitman, he enlisted in the military and became a captain and flight supervisor. Bown died on October 27, 1997 in Walla Walla, Washington.
