Gladys Bollinger Papers
Scope and Contents
The Gladys Bollinger Papers consist of essays by Gladys Bollinger on early historical figures and towns in the Walla Walla and Milton-Freewater region. This collection, which dates from 1885 through 1985, has documents and photographs of the Chastain, Simmons, and Bollinger families. There are essays and photographs of the various public schools in the area, particularly of the Ferndale School in the mid-1950s, where Bollinger was a teacher. There is a play on the Oregon centennial that was performed in the Milton-Freewater schools, newspaper clippings on various subjects, and Bollinger's art book from her days as a student is also included.

Biographical Note
Gladys Bollinger was born on October 3, 1898 to Byron and Rosa Lee Chastain-Simmons. She attended Walla Walla High School and then Cheney Normal School to get her teaching certificate. She began teaching at Ferndale School in 1924. She met George H. Bollinger, they were married in 1928 and had two sons, Harold and David Bollinger. She quit teaching in 1932 to become a homemaker, but returned to Ferndale in 1945 through 1965. Gladys died on December 29, 1988. She was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday school. She also enjoyed studying the history of Walla Walla, Washington.
