Scope and Contents
The Whitman Mission National Historic Site Collection consists of material related to the Whitman Mission Site in Walla Walla, Washington. This collection, which dates from 1947 to 1987, contains photographs, brochures, correspondence, informational booklets, newspaper clippings, and a photocopy of an academic paper "Whitman Mission Overview,” written by Roderick Sprague. It also includes promotional material for the Whitman Monument.

Historical Note
The Whitman Mission National Historic Site, established in 1936, is located in Walla Walla, Washington at Waiilatpu, the former location of the Whitman Mission. The site commemorates Dr. Marcus Whitman and his wife, Narcissa Whitman and their role in establishing the Oregon Trail. It also memorializes the Whitmans and eleven other missionaries who were killed by the Cayuse on November 29, 1847. The Whitman Mission National Historic Site contains a memorial obelisk, a small museum, and a covered wagon.
