Scope and Contents

The Purdy Cornelison and Anita Blucher Scrapbooks , which spans from approximately 1934 through 1938, consists of two scrapbooks belonging to two Whitman College students, one belonging to [Vernon] Purdy Cornelison and the other to Anita Blucher. The scrapbooks contain letters, and memorabilia from Sigma Chi and Delta Delta Delta, two greek organizations Blucher and Cornelison were a part of. The scrapbooks also contain programs from college concerts, plays, and commencements, newspaper clippings, photographs, telegrams, and other college ephemera. This collection gives insight into what Whitman College was like during this time period, and the organizations and social engagements students participated in.

Biographical Note

Anita Cornelison, originally Blucher, was born on December 24, 1916 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Joseph and Alice Blucher. Shortly after her birth, her parents moved to Seattle, Washington where Anita primarily grew up. After graduating high school, Anita went to Whitman College, where she graduated from in 1939 with a B.A. in English and a minor in History and French. Anita and Purdy met at Whitman in 1937, and got married in 1939.During her time at Whitman, she was involved with Delta Delta Delta, a sorority on campus. After graduating from Whitman College, she went on to work as a substitute teacher and a homemaker. She died in 1990.

Purdy Cornelison was born in Pendleton, Washington to James Maupin and Lavara Purdy Cornelison. He graduated from Whitman College in 1938 with a B.A. in Economics and Business administration. During his time at Whitman College, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He later went on to teach Biology in the public school system for 35 years. Purdy died in 2009. Both Anita and Purdy were survived by Margaret Hogland and James Cornelison.
