Scope and Contents

The Nellie Day Scrapbooks consists of two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings related to the family and career of Nellie G. Day. These include information about her father, the pioneer W. S. Gilliam. These scrapbooks, which date from 1888 through 1917, also include items related to her own graduation from the State Normal School in Salem, Oregon in 1883, and her subsequent career as a teacher and as school superintendent in Walla Walla, WA. There are also materials related to her marriage to Jesse N. Day, and columns that she wrote as a newspaper social editor.

Biographical Note

Ellen “Nellie” Gilliam Day was born in 1854 in Dallas, Oregon. She graduated from the State Normal School and was later a professor at Whitman College in 1883. She was the first female superintendent of the Schools of Walla Walla County in the late 1800s. Day passed away in 1940.
