Scope and Contents

The Sherwood Famil Papers consists of Whitman College Trustee materials and correspondence, Whitman College information, personal correspondence, photographs, albums, certificates and awards of Donald Sherwood who served on the Board of Trustees from 1954 to 1972. The story of Sherwood and Roberts, and information from the real estate and financial services company he founded, are also part of the collection.

Legal writings, papers delivered on the development of the Columbia River, Pacific Northwest History Conference papers and materials from his 1942 Congressional campaign are included in the materials of Cameron Sherwood. Correspondence and materials from his tenure as a Whitman College Overseer and as a Class Agent are also included.

Biographical Note

Donald Sherwood was born on September 29, 1901 in Colville, Washington. He attended Whitman College from 1918 to 1922, graduating with a degree in economics and science. On December 7, 1929 he married Virginia Sherwood, and by 1933 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Church Grape Juice Company. In 1951 Sherwood became a member of the Board of Overseers of Whitman College, and in 1954 he was named to the Board of Trustees, serving as the president from 1965 to 1972. In 1972 he donated one million dollars to the college. He died in September of 1994.
