Lloyd R. Hawley Papers and Autograph Skin
Scope and Contents
The Lloyd Hawley Papers and Autograph Skin Collection contains postcards, a scrapbook made by Lloyd R. Hawley during his time as a student at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, letters, Whitman College musical programs, and materials from the Whitman College football team and school dances. The collection also includes a 3 feet x 2.5 feet hide with over 50 autographs of friend and family. Most autographs include the signer’s name, hometown, and date. Several autographs are complemented by illustrations. Among the signers is Neva Greene of Spokane, Washington, who had been romantically involved with Chester Maxey when he was a student at Whitman. Maxey went on to become the seventh President of Whitman College. Ultimately, Hawley and Greene were married. Other signers include Hawley’s Whitman College classmates. While attending Whitman, Hawley kept the skin mounted on the wall of his dormitory room in Billings Hall.
