Biographical / Historical

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) was founded in 1902 with the purpose of collecting and governing 26 national sororities, including those present on Whitman campus. Whitman automatically became a part of the NPC when the first national sorority, Phi Mu, colonized campus in 1914. Whitman's chapter of Panhellenic unites all sororities under a common creed, regulating and promoting cohesion amongst the groups. Panhellenic began operating in an official capacity in 1923. The organization hosts philanthropic, academic and social events, including Greekend, a celebration of Greek life held in conjunction with its fraternity counterpart, the Interfraternity Council (IFC). Panhellenic is the body charged with promoting general sorority interests at Whitman, working in conjunction with the IFC and student governing bodies.
