Biographical / Historical
Winslow S. Anderson was born July 28, 1898 in Portland, Maine. During World War I, he served as a chemical warfare officer. Anderson graduated from Bates College in 1921 with a degree in chemistry, and he went on to attend graduate school at the University of Minnesota. In 1925, Anderson became a chemistry professor at Rollins College in Orlando Florida, and in 1929 he became dean of the college.
In 1942, Anderson moved to Walla Walla to become Whitman... College’s sixth president. As a wartime president of Whitman, Anderson was faced with the challenge of retaining male students during a difficult financial time for the college. Following the trend at other colleges, Anderson helped to bring the V-5 and V-12 naval programs to Whitman, which allowed students to pursue a liberal arts education while also training for military service. On November 13, 1948 Winslow S. Anderson died in Rochester, Minnesota at the Mayo Clinic, where he was receiving treatment for a brain tumor.
