Biographical / Historical
Shalom (currently known as Kehillat Shalom) is a Jewish student organization founded in 1992 at Whitman "to provide a support group for Jewish students...". Campus counselor Sharon Kaufman-Osborn was heavily involved with the organization helping to found Shalom, and she served as the group's advisor from 1992 to 2014. From its beginning, Shalom has been involved with hosting events for Jewish Whitman students such as Shalom's "Fridays at Five" Shabbat services, Jewish holiday celebrations, klezmer performances, and inviting speakers, including several Holocaust survivors, to campus. In the mid 2000's, Shalom became affiliated with the Jewish campus organization Hilel International and changed the group's name to Hilel-Shalom. In 2018, Shalom ended their affiliation with Hilel International and renamed the group Kehillat Shalom.
