Biographical / Historical

The Special Assistant to the President for Native American Outreach was a position created by Whitman College president Sarah Bolton in 2022. The purpose of the position is to coordinate and advise the efforts of the College to uphold its Memorandum of Agreement with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Cawíitxpuu (Jeanine Gordon) was the first person to hold the position.

In her first year, Jeanine assumed the position of chair of the Whitman College Advisory Council for Collaboration with CTUIR (which she renamed to Pášxapa Advisory Council in 2024), initiated the first annual Pášxapa Powwow, collaborated with the Indigenous Peoples Education and Culture Club (IPECC) on the first annual Salmon Film Festival, and organized the first Red Dress Day at Whitman.
