Biographical / Historical

John Cushing (J.C.) Lyman, class of ‘09, served on the Whitman College Board of Trustees for many years. He also served as President of the Walla Walla Valley Medical Association and was founder of the American Board of Surgery. As an undergraduate at Whitman, he played on the football team and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He then attended Johns Hopkins University, where he received his medical degree in 1913. After medical school, he served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army during WWI. He returned to Walla Walla in 1920 and began serving on the Board of Overseers from 1925-1935. He then served on the Board of Trustees from 1935-1965, including as Board President from 1952-1965.
