Records of the board of trustees and its committees are closed for 30 years from the date of creation. Access to files spanning multiple years will be opened to researchers based on the date of the most recent materials. Student educational records such as credentials, grade sheets, correspondence, reports, notes, applications, and all other records pertaining to past and present students are governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and are restricted for 75 years from the date of creation. Personnel related files of the college's faculty and staff, including search, review, promotion, reappointment, tenure, and disciplinary/grievance records, are restricted for 75 years from the date of creation. Biographical

John W. Stanton was born in Washington state on July 31, 1955. He grew up in various parts of Washington before attending Whitman College in 1973. While at Whitman, John was the Associated Students of Whitman College (ASWC) president. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1977, he attended Harvard Business School. John received his MBA in 1979.

In 1982, John became the vice chairman of McCaw Cellular. He would hold the position until 1992, when he became chairman and chief executive officer of Western Wireless. John became the chairman and chief executive officer of VoiceStream Wireless in 1994, which would be acquired and renamed T-Mobile in his second-to-last year in the position. John and his spouse, Terry Gillespie, started investment firm Trilogy Equity Partners and Trilogy International Partners in 2006. Since 1997, John has served as director for a number of companies, including Columbia Sportswear, Costco Wholesale, and Microsoft. He is the owner and chairman of the Seattle Major League Baseball team, the Mariners, since 2016.

John served on the Whitman College board of overseers from 1988 to 1993 before joining the board of trustees in 1993. He was chairman from 2006 to 2008. John chaired Whitman’s eight-year campaign, “Now Is the Time” during his final years on the board. He retired in 2015.

The sophomore living facility, Stanton Hall, completed in 2018, is named after John.

Materials were rehoused in acid-free folders and original folder titles were maintained, with archivist-supplied clarification where necessary. Upon accession, the materials were in a mostly chronological arrangement, which guided the archivist's decision to arrange the entire collection chronologically.
