Content Description

The Evelyn Johnson Chapman Mortar Board Scrapbook chronicles the academic years of the Mortar Board beginning with the 1949-1950 academic year and ending with the 1953-1954 academic year. Mortar Board was an honors society for senior female Whitman College students. The scrapbook, which likely passed hands during its creation, relays a social history of the Mortar Board as recorded through newspaper clippings, letters, and memorabilia. The majority of the scrapbook contains newspaper clippings that capture the activities and events that made up the social lives of Mortar Board members. This includes membership announcements, columns on dating culture, sorority news, the annual May Fete, homecoming, Mortar Board King, student “Wheel of the Week” profiles, clippings with mentions of members, and “Who’s Who” accolades.
