Scope and Contents

The Office of the President: Robert Skotheim Papers consists of correspondence, speeches, and newspaper clippings. These papers, which date from 1975 through 2002, also contains photographs, course outlines and class materials. There are also travel itineraries and reports, inauguration materials and certificates of congratulations, and daily planners and event programs. There are also correspondence, campus social occasion planning notebooks, newspaper articles, and speeches of his wife, Nadine Skotheim.

Conditions Governing Access

A collection-level version of this finding aid is published. The file-level inventory can only be viewed internally. This collection has not been processed or screened. For materials that are technically open because the 30-year restricted period has passed, they still need to be reviewed before they can be served. FERPA guidelines require that we restrict access to the following types of materials:

· Student academic records

· Disciplinary and counseling records (for students, faculty, or staff)

· Financial aid files containing student personally identifiable information (PPI). Documents including discussions financial aid that do not contain PPI are not restricted.

· Faculty and staff personal files, including information on hiring and searches

· Promotion, tenure or grievance files

· Medical records

· Legal counsel case files

Biographical Note

Robert Allen Skotheim was born January 21, 1933 to Sivert and Marjorie Skotheim in Seattle, Washington. Robert attended Fauntleroy School, West Seattle High School, and eventually, Princeton. He attended the University of Washington where he obtained a B.A. in history. He later went on to get his Ph.D. at University of Washington Graduate School. After his extensive schooling, he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship and spent a year in France. Upon returning from Europe, he taught history at University of Colorado, Boulder, was a provost at Hobart and William Smith College, and eventually became the president of Whitman College, where he remained from 1975 through 1988.

These papers contains correspondence, speeches, and newspaper clippings.
