Scope and Contents

The Myrtle McCabe Piper Papers document the history and activities of the Women’s Improvement Club of Milton-Freewater. These papers include newspaper and magazine articles. These papers, which date from 1930 to 1986, include speeches and notes for a talk Myrtle gave to the club about American artist Andrew Wyeth.

Biographical Note

Myrtle McCabe Piper was born on November 27, 1902 in Knobel Arkansas to David Alexander and Nancy Ann Cody McCabe. The family moved to Walla Walla in 1907 and Myrtle attended schools in both Walla Walla and Milton-Freewater. She married Elwood Elam Piper on December 27, 1923, and the couple was active in both Walla Walla and Milton-Freewater society. Myrtle was a member of the Walla Walla Christian Church, where she was involved with many committees, taught sunday school, and served as a deaconess for several years. She was also an active member of the Milton-Freewater Women’s Improvement Club, holding every office in the club at least once and the office of president twice, in 1961 and 1971. It was through the Women’s Improvement Club that she was given the opportunity to speak on the topic of American artist Andrew Wyeth, the notes from which comprise the majority of this collection. McCabe Piper died in Walla Walla on December 29, 1996.
