Biographical Note
Bernice “Bunny” Stevens was born as Bernice Hogenson on August 14, 1909 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Bunny attended Westside High School before graduating from the University of Wisconsin Nursing School as a registered nurse in 1930. On July 20, 1933 Bunny married Dr. Ralph W. Stevens. They later moved to Walla Walla in 1937. In 1969, Bunny started the Mexican Independence Day celebration at Pioneer Park. She also started the Walla Walla Summerfest with Kay Williams. Bunny was a developer of the Fort Walla Walla Amphitheater, and helped produce “Trails West.” She also helped her husband get the new Walla Walla Community College and Walla Walla High School campuses built. She received the Chamber of Commerce Award of Merit in 1976, and served as chair of a bicentennial committee. Bunny founded the Walla Walla Symphony Guild, and was a member of the First Congregational Church and its Ruth Circle, Whitman Guild, President’s Association of Whitman College, Walla Walla Archaeological Society, Art Club, Chapter BI of PEO, Walla Walla Pioneer and Historical Society, Walla Walla Country Club, Lady Elks, Walla Walla Medical Auxiliary, and the Symphony Society. She died on November 21, 1989 following injuries sustained during an automobile accident.

Bunny Stevens was an active member of the Walla Walla community, playing an integral role in the Summerfest as well as many other events and organizations.
