Biographical Note
Carl Penner was born on January 4, 1889, in Walla Walla, Washington. He grew up on a farm with his parents and three siblings. As an adult he was owned a blacksmith shop in Walla Walla. He was also a farmer and inventor, most known for the food quick freezer, which was widely used by the army during World War Two. He was the mayor of Starbuck, Washington for six years. Carl Penner built the Pioneer Museum at the request of the Pioneer Historical society at age 77, and helped found the Fort Walla Walla museum at age 90. He received many awards, including the 1967 Washington State Outstanding Senior Citizen Award, the 1973 Chamber of Commerce Merit Award, and the 1974 Walla Walla Elks Distinguished Citizen Award. He died on July 19, 1983.
