Robert B. Heilman Manuscript
Scope and Contents
The Robery B. Heilman Manuscript contains Robert B. Heilman’s handwritten manuscript (plus two chapters in typescript) of “The Ways of the World: Comedy and Society,” written during his tenure as Arnold Professor at Whitman College in 1977. The book was published in 1978 by University of Washington Press. Whitman College, President Robert Skothiem, is acknowledged in the preface.

Biographical Note
Robert Bechtold Heilman, 1906-2004, was an American educator, scholar, critic, editor, and essayist. He attended Lafayette College and later received his PhD. in English from Harvard University in 1935. Heilman joined the University of Washington faculty in 1948 as chair of the English Department, which he led until his retirement in 1971. From 1976 to 1977 Heilman taught at Whitman College as a visiting professor, spoke at Cordiner Hall, and gave the commencement address to the Class of 1977. Over the course of his career he authored nineteen books and contributed to the Sewanee-Review for sixty years.
