Scope and Contents
The Rhoda Scott Collection of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman Letters contains four original letters written by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman to family and friends while they were living at the Whitman Mission in Walla Walla, Washington. The collection includes reproductions and transcriptions of the letters. There are also photographs of Marcus Whitman’s grand niece, as well as the house in which he was born.

Biographical Note
Rhoda Scott was born in 1913, and was a descendent of Marcus Whitman. Scott was the grand niece of Martha Barrett, who was the grand niece of Marcus Whitman. Barrett was a direct descendent of Marcus Whitman’s sister, Alice Whitman. Scott received the Whitman letters from her great aunt, who had kept them from her grandmother. Scott died in July of 2001.
