Scope and Contents

The Aurel Maxey Kelly and Elnora Campbell Maxey Scrapbooks contains three scrapbooks dating from 1914 to 1946. All scrapbooks include newspaper articles and musical programs from Elnora Campbell Maxey’s career, as well as newspaper articles chronicling both Elnora and Aurel Kelly’s time at Whitman College. Also present are holiday cards to and from both women, as well as photographs and musical programs.

Biographical Note

Elnora Campbell was born on August 10, 1890 in Great Falls, Montana. She married Chester Collins Maxey in 1915, and together they moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1925, where Chester would teach political science at Whitman College. Chester Collins Maxey later served as the Whitman College president from 1948 to 1959.

Elnora also taught at the Whitman College Conservatory of Music from 1925 to 1944, and was the director of the Glee Club from 1937 until her retirement. Elnora and Chester Maxey had two daughters, Marilyn and Aurel, both Whitman College graduates. Elnora Campbell Maxey died on April 27, 1980.

Aurel Maxey Kelly was born on April 24, 1923. She attended Whitman College, and graduated with a degree in political science in 1944. Aurel was a Walla Walla attorney, and later served as a judge on the Colorado Appeals Court. Aurel died on November 10, 2000.

Abstract

The Aurel Maxey Kelly and Elnora Campbell Maxey Scrapbooks contains scrapboks with newspapers clippings, personal holiday cards, photographs, and musical programs. Elnora and Aurel were mother and daughter, and both were involved in the Whitman College and Walla Walla communities.
