Scope and Contents

The Ward Gardner Papers, which dates from circa 1910 to 1968, contains three scrapbooks as well as photographs and newspaper clippings related to the Walla Walla Kennel Club. One scrapbook includes personal family photographs from the 1910s to the 1930s. The second scrapbook contains mainly “stud books,” or breed registries, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. The third scrapbook is made up of newspaper clippings and photographs related to his Irish setters in dog shows. The collection also include family photographs and a family photograph album, as well as materials related to the Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce.

Biographical Note

Ward Gardner was born in Walla Walla, Washington on October 14, 1891. He was president and general manager of the Gardner's Department Store for 43 years, taking over from his father and retiring in 1970. He was also a former president of the Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce, and the Veterans Memorial Park Association, as well as a member of the Walla Walla Wagon Wheelers and the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association. Gardner founded the Walla Walla Kennel Club in 1938, and was later the local delegate to the American Kennel Club. He was nationally recognized for his work in dog shows, and was called upon to judge regional and national kennel events. Garner died on January 7, 1976.
