Phillip Pope Papers
Scope and Contents
The Philip Pope papers house the personal and academic records of Philip Pope. This collection, which dates from 1899 to 1965, consists of family photographs, manuscripts for “Vercingetorix: A Historical Epic”, a book Pope wrote on a king of Gaul who led a rebellion against Julius Caesar, slides from his travels to India, Australia, Ireland, Canada, Rome, Greece, and Scotland, teaching materials, and travel ephemera. The collection also include films from 1942-1953 of scenes at Whitman campus, local places of interest, and McNary Dam under construction. This collection documents the interests of a botanist and zoologist, as well as those of an avid traveller.

Biographical Note
Philip Huntley Pope was born on October 24, 1887 in Manchester, Maine. He earned a Bachelor’s in biology from Bowdoin College, a Master’s in zoology and botany from Harvard, and a Ph.D. from University of Pittsburgh. He taught biology at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, for one year, and Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington from 1930-1953. Around 1922, he married Louise Smith. He travelled often, both domestically and internationally, and took many photographs of landscapes and plants. Additionally, he was interested in ancient Greece and Rome, publishing “Vercingetorix: A Historical Epic,” a book on a king of Gaul who led a rebellion against Julius Caesar. Pope died November 11, 1970, at the age of 83.
