Veterans Administration Records
Scope and Contents
The Veterans Administration Records includes information about the history of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Walla Walla, located on the grounds of the old Fort Walla Walla. These records, which span from 1943 through 1962, also consist of correspondence between the regional Seattle office and Whitman College, and forms related to student veterans in the area. Additionally, the collection provides records of student veterans, as well as descriptions of Whitman College vocational courses for their student veterans. The Veterans Administration provided information about the G.I. Bill and requests for student veterans housing. Also included are blueprints from Whitman College of planned buildings on its campus, and financial documents for student charges. The collection dates from 1943 to 1962.

Historical Note
The Veterans Administration was formed in 1930 as a consolidation of the Veterans Bureau, the Bureau of Pensions of the Interior Department, and the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. It was meant to provide government funded benefits for United States veterans. Walla Walla was a host to the Veterans Administration Hospital, now called Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center. The Administration was changed to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 1989, which was signed into law by Ronald Reagan but came into effect under George H.W. Bush.
