Scope and Contents

The Vera Joyce Nelson Papers contain materials related to Nelson’s personal and professional work, mostly regarding indigenous peoples’ stories in the Pacific Northwest. A large portion of the collection consists of Nelson’s research materials about Marie Dorion, a Native American woman. Materials include Nelson’s manuscript “Who was Marie Dorion?” as well as correspondence about the manuscript. The collection also includes documents from the Newkirk family, as well as her own personal family history. The collection’s materials date from 1932 to 1985.

Vera Joyce Nelson, born July 22, 1903, was an Oregon poet and officer in the Verseweavers, a poetry society out of Portland, Oregon. She died on May 15, 1995.
