Historical Note
In 1907, Archer W. Hendrick was appointed to the position of dean of the college by President Stephen B.L. Penrose. Before becoming dean of the college, Hendrick was an assistant English professor at Whitman College hired in 1902. Working closely with President Penrose, he proposed and fundraised for the Greater Whitman Plan, a plan to enlarge the campus grounds and expand Whitman’s academic programs (by the inclusion of an engineering program), which was endorsed by the trustees.
